Art Recognition provides a tool to evaluate the authenticity of fine art leveraging latest artificial intelligence methods. The system is fast, non-invasive, and unbiased. Based on photographic reproductions of an artist’s paintings, the tool checks whether the artist’s typical features – his “brushstroke”​ – correspond to those of the painting in question.

iart specialises on media architectures. By this we mean the conception, planning, realisation and operation of media solutions for exhibitions, museums, architectural projects and exterior spaces.

Since 2001, iart realises projects at the cutting edge between media, art and technology, giving a special focus to spatial interaction. We meet complex design challenges by leveraging our background as an engineering firm to serve as an interdisciplinary competence centre drawing from expertise in management, design, engineering and servicing.

Because our ambition is to conceive bespoke multimedia concepts, each project presents a new challenge. Based on the requirements of the project – the rooms, the presentation and the exhibits – we develop new concepts and innovative technical solutions that offer visitors intuitive access to their contents. We owe the success of our projects to our interdisciplinary team of experts – consisting of engineers, architects, scenographers, interaction and industrial designers, cultural scientists, media scientists and art historians – as well as our close collaboration with the architects, exhibition designers, curators and artists of each project.

We create new business models for the movie industry by taking advantage of the decline of traditional business models in the creative industries and the change of customer behavior in film-watching. We have two focuses for B2C and B2B: short film distribution through and data driven moviemaking. We have created as a short film distribution platform that creates new distribution channels for short-filmmakers and gives the chance of enjoying the increasing quality of short films for the short film audience in a subscription based video-on-demand model.

Data-driven Moviemaking: We can measurably improve a film’s reach to the audience by providing important data to producers during writing, production and post-production through a unique approach that blends AI based learning of the film and predictive analytics. Our unique technologies can understand the ingredients of a film and predict the audience reaction from script level to rough cut and fine cut of the film.

Le collectif 1m83 offre la possibilité aux artistes d’exposer sur des bâtiments en construction ou en rénovation avec comme support d’expression des bâches de chantier.

Au travers de ces oeuvres éphémères, nous offrons également un moyen innovant pour les propriétaires d’immeuble, les régies et les entreprises générales de communiquer sur leurs réalisations en cours, tout en soutenant l’art et la culture.

Rattaché au Collège des Humanités de l’EPFL, Artlab présente des expositions temporaires et de longues durées qui rapprochent le monde de la science à celui des Humanités. Il abrite également un Montreux Jazz Café dans lequel il est possible de consulter les archives audio-visuelles du festival.
Inauguré à l’automne 2016, le bâtiment est l’œuvre de l’architecte japonais Kengo Kuma.

It is a place for creative and critical discourse on the aesthetic, socio-political and economic impact of media technologies. HeK shows contemporary art that explores and configures new technologies; it promotes an aesthetic practice that uses information technology as a medium, makes it vividly accessible and actively intervenes in its processes. HeK thereby addresses the pressing issues of twenty-first-century culture and makes an active contribution to their future evolution.

Since 1967, audiovisual recordings of the Montreux Jazz Festival bring together the greatest musicians of the 20th century. The collection was inscribed in the 2013 UNESCO Memory of the World Register. Over 5,000 hours of live concerts were recorded in state-of-the-art broadcast quality for both video and audio, including multi-tracks.

The collection was digitized in a partnership between EPFL and the Claude Nobs Foundation. The Montreux Jazz Digital Project aims to preserve and transform this heritage into a unique archive of “raw material” for researchers to innovate in the field of music technology, signal processing, acoustics, multimedia, design, architecture, neurosciences, museology, or social and human sciences. Adding value to the collection, a substantial metadata enhancement program is also devised for schools, musicians and musicologists.

As part of the Vice-Presidency for Innovation at EPFL, the Metamedia Center is leading the Montreux Jazz Digital Project since 2010. A team with multi-disciplinary skills was built to coordinate and run the archiving work in all its faces: inventory, digitization, quality control, indexing, metadata enrichment, storage, value addition, and long-term preservation strategies. Including audio/video specialists, software developers, archivist, musicologist, sociologist, and project managers, the team is now developing new collaborations to take care and preserve other kinds of collections in the field of music and popular arts. Considering such collections as reference databases, the objective of the Metamedia Center consists in defining research and innovation projects within EPFL labs, start-ups, and external partners.
